BUDA -- Playing against Class 4A and 5A schools is nothing new to the Poth Pirette basketball program, so heading to the Hays Tournament Dec. 6, the Pirettes knew the competition would be tough. The team rose to the challenge, though, going 3-1 to win the Silver bracket championship.

The Pirettes faced off against Class 5A New Braunfels in their opening game. They led 34-31 at the half, and finished with a 63-57 victory. Ashley Fuller led the Pirettes with 20 points, followed by Devon Dylla with 15.

Next, the Pirettes were matched up with the Lady Knights of Steele, ranked No. 7 in Class 5A. This proved to be a tough match, as Steele’s speed and athleticism forced many turnovers for the Pirettes. Poth eventually fell, 66-49.

The loss moved the Pirettes to the Silver bracket for further competition. The Pirettes took on Class 4A Austin Stephen F. Austin and had a 37-26 lead at the half. Shelby Yanta led all scoring with 12, and Fuller and Dylla each added 11 points apiece as the Pirettes took the 66-42 win.

Moving to the championship game, the Pirettes faced Class 5A Madison. The Lady Mavs’ speed and quick shooting caused the Pirettes to struggle early on, and Poth was down by 2 at the half. Persistence and teamwork from the entire team led the Pirettes to strong second half play and a 48-42 win. Fuller led all scorers with 13, followed by Dylla with 11. Fuller was named to the all-tournament team.

Poth Head Coach Peggy Hosek was pleased with her team’s tournament showing.

“This was a great tournament for us,” Hosek said. “We grew a lot and overcame some adversities.”

The Pirettes were set to begin district play Dec. 11, as the team traveled to Karnes City to face the Lady Badgers.
