Eugene ‘Gene’ A. McCloskey
Eugene “Gene” A. McCloskey passed into the loving embrace of his heavenly Father on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at the age of 87. His beloved wife, Julia had awaited him there since Dec. 12, 2011.
Gene and Julia “Judy” had met while both were stationed at the N.O.T.S. (Naval) base near Inyokern, Calif., during World War II and were married on base in 1946. A curious and creative person, Gene could sing and draw, and loved music, dancing, photography, and gardening. Reading, working crossword puzzles, and writing lively letters and poetry occupied time not spent “working.” Creating captivating interior Christmas scenes was an annual source of pride for him and an eagerly awaited treat for the children.
Retiring from the Pearl Brewing Co. in 1987, Gene maintained fond memories of the brewery and his co-workers. After retirement, he and Judy loved to go to the coast on fishing trips and to Louisiana and Las Vegas in the company of family and friends.
Gene was preceded in death by his dear parents, Frank and Bessie (Kolonko) McClosky; and his wife, Julia (Giannini) McCloskey.
He is survived by his children, Antoinette M. Gustafson, Frances Kallies and husband Michael, and Billy McCloskey and wife Sherilyn; six grandchildren, Michael, Julia and husband Randy, Jennifer, Terry and wife Katherine, Brandon and wife Kelly, and Shelby; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great- grandchild. He is also survived by his sisters, Louise Mulhern, Katy Butts, Sister Rose McClosky, OLVM, and Isabel Grothues and husband Marcel; as well as his sister-in-law, Rose Gallichio and brother-in-law Anthony Giannini.
He will be missed and remembered by his cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, and friends, including Nancy and Mike Ciavarella, Fay Hendrix, Pat LaScoula, Bill Clay, Mark Moll, and his beloved dog Sugar. Gene’s family is most grateful to his home caregivers and nurses, Angie, Catherine, Mondre, and Richard, and also to the caring staff at the Chandler Skilled Nursing Center.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, Dec. 4, from 6-9 p.m. in the Mission Park Funeral Chapel in San Antonio with a rosary recited at 7 p.m.
A funeral Mass was held on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Jerome Catholic Church in San Antonio with the Rev. John Flanagan officiating.
Interment followed in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
