Lucy Vavra Niemietz Brandt, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, went to her heavenly home on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, in the Mission Regional Medical Center in Mission, Texas, at the age of 101 after a brief illness. She was born on Dec. 11, 1911, in Cestohowa.

She married the father of her children in Floresville on June 7, 1937, and shortly thereafter moved to Mission and started their family. Lucy was the oldest of 10 children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth and Jerome Niemietz; her first husband, Jerry Vavra; her second husband, Rudy Brandt; and brothers Steve, Pete, Frank, and Emil. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Eleanor Kotzur, Regina Niemietz, Annie Niemietz, and Helen Bass; and her son, Sherman Vavra.

Lucy is survived by her children, Anna Mae Limbaugh of Mission and Catherine James and husband Bob of McAllen; grandchildren Ronald Limbaugh and wife Ginger of Portland, Michelle James of Kingsville, Jennifer Johnson and husband Kyle of Richmond, Keri Rodgers and husband Steve of New Braunfels, and J.J. Vavra and wife Lindsey of Harlingen; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Sylvia Laning of Florida; daughter-in-law Toni Vavra; and sister-in-law Jean Niemietz.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, Dec. 18, from 4-7 p.m. with a rosary at 6 p.m. in the Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Mission.

Interment will follow in the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Mission.
