FLORESVILLE -- Coming off a 5-game winning streak, the Floresville Tiger varsity basketball team faced the eighth-ranked team in San Antonio, the Lanier Voks, last Tuesday night on the Tigers’ home court.

The Voks arrived in Floresville with a 13-2 record and an explosive offense that had been averaging 72 points per game. The Tigers knew that they would have to bring their best effort to the court in order to curtail the Voks’ impressive perimeter shooting.

It was back and forth through the first half of the game, with the Voks going into the locker room up by a point at 27-26. Obviously, the adjustments to the Tigers’ defensive strategy kept the Voks’ scoring to a minimum, but the Tigers were plagued by turnovers, which continued into the second half of play.

In the fourth quarter, the Tigers were down by as many as 9 points, but the defensive play of senior Darren Orth, who finished with four steals, got the Tigers right back into the game. With less than a minute left, the Tigers were only down by 4, but the Voks were at the free-throw line and iced the game by hitting both free throws. The Voks picked up the victory, 52-46.

The Tigers had three players in double digits, with Jaron Medina and Charlie Albert finishing with 11 points each, and Orth added 10 points to the Tiger effort. Juniors Mason Ray and Estevan Mendiola added 7 points each, and Albert added 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

The Tigers then put their 9-5 season record on the line to host the 10-9 Edison Bears last Friday night. Floresville came out of the locker room on fire, hitting five of seven from the 3-point line, and racking up 21 points by the end of the first quarter. The Floresville shooting spree slowed in the second quarter, however, and Edison was allowed to head into the locker room trailing by only 6 points.

In the third quarter, point guard Medina and forward Orth did a good job finding their teammates with four assists each, They helped the Tigers maintain their lead going into the fourth quarter. With just over two minutes left in the game, Edison had cut the lead to 3, but the Tigers finished out with some key free throws and a steal to finish the game with a layup and the win, 54-46.

The Tigers had three players in double digits, including Medina with 14, Albert with 13, and Ray with 10. Ray also contributed big on the boards with six rebounds.

The win gives the Tigers a 10-5 record as they get ready for their district opener against the McCollum Cowboys at McCollum High School. The game will be played this Friday, Dec. 21, with tipoff set for 6:30 p.m.

Come out and support the Tigers!
