STOCKDALE -- It’s always a good game when the teams from Stockdale and Nixon-Smiley get together, but when they both happen to be state-ranked, it becomes all the better. This was the case in Stockdale last Tuesday as the Lady Mustang basketball team made the short drive up U.S. 87 to take on the Lady Brahmas in their first district game of the season.

Led by junior post Savanna Martinez, the Lady Mustangs jumped out well in the beginning of the game, scoring 18 first-period points, while holding the Lady Brahmas to 11. The 7-point lead was nice, but it didn’t stay that way for long.

With a spirited crowd at their side, the Stockdale Lady Brahmas made some adjustments and thundered back during the second stanza. Senior guard Makaley Perez helped guide the team to 13 second-period points, while holding Nixon-Smiley to just 7. As the two teams headed for the locker rooms, it was a 1-point game, with the Lady Mustangs on top, 25-24.

After a short halftime, the teams returned to the floor, and Stockdale picked up right where it left off. The Lady Brahmas held the Lady Mustangs to 8 points, while scoring 12 of their own to take a 36-33 lead into the final eight minutes of play.

Nixon-Smiley was far from finished, though, and the Lady Mustangs came galloping back in the fourth. Martinez, Kelby Henderson, and the others turned up the heat, scoring 19 points against the Lady Brahmas. At the same time, Stockdale was held to 11 points, and fell a little behind the visiting team from Nixon-Smiley. When the final buzzer sounded, it was the Lady Mustangs celebrating a victory, 52-47.

“Both of these teams are really good, and it showed,” said one Stockdale fan in attendance. “We’ll be looking for a little payback when we play them again.”

The rematch will be played Tuesday, Jan. 15, in Nixon. Until then, the teams will continue with their District 28-2A schedule, as well as several non-district games. District 28-2A is one of the most competitive districts in the state, and also includes Poth, Karnes City, Schulenburg, Luling, and Hallettsville.
