Officials probe brush fire
FLORESVILLE -- The cause of a brush fire that destroyed an estimated 150 acres north of here remained unknown as of press time Dec. 21, according to Chief Lorenzo Ortiz of the Floresville Volunteer Fire Department. No one was hurt and no structures were damaged.
Firefighters first were called to a property near the intersection of C.R. 331 and C.R. 304 at approximately 6 a.m. They would return to the area at least two times, as strong winds kept rekindling the blaze -- which reached a property on Bentwood Drive -- inside the burn area, Ortiz said. Firefighters from Floresville, Cañada Verde, and Sutherland Springs, along with crews and equipment from Wilson County precincts 1 and 2, battled the flames well into the evening, with the last firefighters leaving the scene after 9 p.m.
While open burning and fireworks are not banned in the unincorporated areas of Wilson County during this year’s holiday season, Ortiz is urging residents to exercise extreme caution when using fireworks and barbecue grills, or when participating in any activity involving fire. Vegetation that grew vibrant during times of plentiful rain now have become dry and brittle amid recent freezing temperatures and wind, making the ideal conditions for even the smallest of fires to quickly get out of control.
