School board OKs new course
FLORESVILLE --Beginning in the 2013-14 school year, area students interested in a career in nursing will be able to train to become certified nursing assistants. This is because the Floresville Independent School District’s (ISD) board of trustees voted at its Dec. 18 meeting to add the course.
Floresville ISD Superintendent’s Secretary Kim Cathey said after the meeting that the course is being offered through a partnership with Palo Alto College. It replaces the licensed vocational nurse program previously offered by the Alamo Colleges Floresville Center, which is set to end because it will no longer be supported by the colleges or by Alamo Area Academics.
Cathey said the Alamo Colleges cited “work-force need” as the reason for terminating the previous program. More students, she said, are enrolling in certified nursing assistant courses.
The board, after meeting in closed session, also approved several personnel- related items, including the following resignations:
•Rachel Maha, LVN
Employees, including Floresville Alternative Center teacher Sandra Migl, Life Skills teacher Donna Urbanczyk, and Air Force Junior ROTC Col. Kenneth Williams, are retiring.
The board also approved the hire of Lacey Miller, who will replace Pavliska.
