Floresville High School’s December female student of the month is Brittney Gonzales, the 17-year-old daughter of Lorene and Cristobal Marquez. She has a younger sibling, Christopher, in the fourth grade at Floresville North Elementary.

For her efforts in the classroom, Brittney was named Outstanding Student of the Year in Dual Credit U.S. History, Algebra II, and Physics last year. As a sophomore, she was chosen as the May Outstanding Female Student of the Month. As a member of UIL Academics, Brittney placed second in district competition in Social Studies. She is a member of Link Crew, the National Honor Society, and Student Council.

Brittney also participates in Business Professionals of America in Medical Office Procedures. In addition, she is a member of the band and was the clarinet section leader last year. She, along with the rest of the band, advanced to the Area G Finals last year. Brittney was the JV defender for soccer. She has also participated in One-Act Play.

When not busy with academic and extracurricular activities, Brittney is active in her community. She has tutored high school students, participated in the ROTC Food Drive, and assisted with the Skills USA Adopt-A-Family project. Brittney also volunteered at the Veterans Day Ceremony. She donated the Pretty Little Liars series to the high school library and the Twilight series to the Wilson County Public Library. She is also active in tae-kwon-do and is employed with Bill Miller Bar-B-Q through the work-based learning program.

Upon graduation, Brittney plans to pursue a pharmaceutical degree. She is considering attending the University of the Incarnate Word, UTSA, or the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio.

The December male student of the month is Kurtis Quillin, the 18-year-old son of Wendy and Jeff Quillin.

Kurtis is a member in good standing with the National Honor Society and is an Eagle Scout. He was selected as a People to People Student Ambassador to England and France in 2006 and has already been named the recipient of a $200 VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship.

As a member of the Mighty Tiger Band, Kurtis currently serves as the TEC Chairman and section leader. He was a member of the Brass Quintet that went to UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest last year. He is a member of both the basketball and track teams at FHS. Kurtis has been the public address announcer for various football and softball games and was requested for the 2A football playoffs and for all softball games at FHS. This year, Kurtis has served as the emcee for the FHS pep rallies and hosts the weekly Floresville Sports Minute for the FHS Untamed newscasts. Kurtis is also a columnist for SA Sports.com. He has been a U.S. Soccer Federation referee, a basketball referee, and a Little League baseball umpire.

Upon graduation, Kurtis plans to attend Oklahoma State University, Texas Christian University, or Southern Illinois University, where he will major in sports media with plans to pursue a career in sports broadcasting.
