For the next 90 days, outdoor burning will not be permitted in Bexar and Wilson counties. This is after commissioners courts in both counties voted unanimously Dec. 27 in favor of accepting the recommendations of their fire marshals.

In Wilson County, Edwin Baker, coordinator of the Wilson County Health and Public Safety Office, serves as the fire marshal. He said that recent cooler temperatures, low humidity, and wind conditions have created optimal conditions for fires to quickly get out of control.

During a burn ban, burning of household trash is permitted during daylight hours and only in a screened burn barrel. Anyone caught violating the ban is subject to a $500 fine, and could be found civilly liable for property damage.

This ban does not apply to fireworks, Baker said, as commissioners would have needed to enact such a ban before Dec. 15. That did not occur.
