the thousands of people traveling the land looking for
food and work. I lived on a farm during the great
depression and never remember going hungry. History
is full of instances where a nation's currency has
become worthless. You know what they say about people
who ignore history.
In a recent comment, I see that you have inflated
your ego balloon by apparently including yourself
among the smart and strong. The employers and the
self employed are the strong smart ones in this
nation. All the rest are just worker ants or bees
if you prefer.

Alvin.....When the financial system fails and money
is worthless, the poor man who knows how to exist off
the land may be the most likely to survive. Others,
as in the past, may just jump out of the window.
It might be wise to follow the Mormon creed and start
to stockpile supplies. Never fear, there are a lot
more Hoover hogs in Texas than there used to be.
401K's and hope make a fine breakfast but a poor supper.

stimulus money spent in an effort to jack up the economy.
So when the stimulus is removed, everyone complains about
a tax increase. This attitude illustrates the difficulty
of reforming the entitlement segment of our nation.
How can any reasonable person condemn the welfare
state and yet complain because the government stopped
funding part of their retirement investment.
We have a representative type of government and the
older I get, the more convinced that I am that the
congress represents the will of the people. The same
attitude prevails.

Hopefully Republicans and Democrats will pay attention to the backlash

member that can't accomplish the mission with a ten
percent cut ought to be replaced.
I cannot understand the moaning about eliminating
the reduction in the payroll tax. This reduction
forced the government to borrow money to reimburse
the Social Security Fund for the amount of money lost.
This highlights the general public's resistance to
spending cuts when they want the government to fund
part of their retirement. This outlay was just added
to our debt.

We Are Already Over the Fiscal Cliff/ Jan. 2,2013

Despite claims that the Administration and Congress saved America from the fiscal cliff with an early morning vote today, the fact is that government spending has already pushed Americans over the cliff.

Only serious reductions in federal spending will stop the cliff dive from ending in a crash landing, yet the events of this past month show that most elected officials remain committed to expanding the welfare-warfare state.

While there was much hand-wringing over the "draconian" cuts that would be imposed by sequestration, in fact sequestration does not cut spending at all.

Under the sequestration plan, government spending will increase by 1.6 trillion over the next eight years. Congress calls this a cut because without sequestration spending will increase by 1.7 trillion over the same time frame. Either way it is an increase in spending.

Yet even these minuscule cuts in the "projected rate of spending" were too much for Washington politicians to bear. The last minute "deal" was the worst of both worlds: higher taxes on nearly all Americans now and a promise to revisit these modest reductions in spending growth two months down the road.

We were here before, when in 2011 Republicans demanded these automatic modest decreases in government growth down the road in exchange for a massive increase in the debt ceiling. As the time drew closer, both parties clamored to avoid even these modest moves.

Make no mistake: the spending addiction is a bipartisan problem. It is generally believed that one party refuses to accept any reductions in military spending while the other party refuses to accept any serious reductions in domestic welfare programs.

In fact, both parties support increases in both military and domestic welfare spending. The two parties may disagree on some details of what kind of military or domestic welfare spending they favor, but they do agree that they both need to increase. This is what is called "bipartisanship" in Washington.

While the media played up the drama of the down-to-the-wire negotiations, there was never any real chance that a deal would not be worked out. It was just drama. That is how Washington operates.

As it happened, a small handful of Congressional and Administration leaders gathered in the dark of the night behind closed doors to hammer out a deal that would be shoved down the throats of Members whose constituents had been told repeatedly that the world would end if this miniscule decrease in the rate of government spending was allowed to go through.

While many on both sides express satisfaction that this deal only increases taxes on the "rich," most Americans will see more of their paycheck going to Washington because of the deal. The Tax Policy Center has estimated that 77 percent of Americans would see higher taxes because of the elimination of the payroll tax cut.

The arguments against the automatic "cuts" in military spending were particularly dishonest. Hawks on both sides warned of doom and gloom if, as the plan called for, the defense budget would have returned to 2007 levels of spending! Does anybody really believe that our defense spending was woefully inadequate just five years ago?

And since 2007 we have been told that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are winding down. According to the Congressional Budget Office, over the next eight years military spending would increase 20 percent without the sequester and would increase 18 percent with the sequester. And this is what is called a dangerous reduction in defense spending?

Ironically, some of the members who are most vocal against tax increases and in favor of cuts to domestic spending are the biggest opponents of cutting a penny from the Pentagon budget. Over and over we were told of the hundreds of thousands of jobs that would be lost should military spending be returned to 2007 levels.

Is it really healthy to think of our defense budget as a jobs program? Many of these allegedly free-market members sound more Keynesian than Paul Krugman when they praise the economic "stimulus" created by militarism.

As Chris Preble of the Cato Institute wrote recently, "It's easy to focus exclusively on the companies and individuals hurt by the cuts and forget that the taxed wealth that funded them is being employed elsewhere."

While Congress ultimately bears responsibility for deficit spending, we must never forget that the Federal Reserve is the chief enabler of deficit spending. Without a central bank eager to monetize the debt, Congress would be unable to fund the welfare-warfare state without imposing unacceptable levels of taxation on the American people.

Of course, the Federal Reserve's policies do impose an "inflation" tax on the American people; however, since this tax is hidden Congress does not fear the same public backlash it would experience if it directly raised income taxes.

I have little hope that a majority of Congress and the President will change their ways and support real spending reductions unless forced to by an economic crisis or by a change in people's attitudes toward government.

Fortunately, increasing numbers of Americans are awakening to the dangers posed by the growth of the welfare-warfare state. Hopefully this movement will continue to grow and force the politicians to reverse course before government spending, taxing, and inflation destroys our economy entirely.

And, the current resident at the white House acts and thinks like a king. He believes he is above American citizens cause he is made of better cloth, is more intelligence, and knows better what is the best for all of us. We no longer have to make any decisions...all the elected officials, beaurocrats, and liberal academia wll be up late tonight deciding what we should all do tomorrow, the following day, and the day after that unto infinity. It doesn't make any difference if close to half of all Americans disagree with Washington, we have no say and there is nothing we can do about it. I have stopped listening to the news and reading about happenings in government cause it does no good...it only breeds frustration and bitterness. Not know about what's going on takes a huge burden off ones back.

An extension of the previous Farm Bill was attached to the complex fiscal cliff bill that passed New Years Day. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Vice President Joe Biden negotiated a nine-month extension of the Farm Bill.

“The farm bill extension measure attached to the fiscal cliff legislation passed by the House of Representatives late last night slashes investment in the future of small rural communities and family farming and ranching,” said Chuck Hassebrook, Executive Director of the Center for Rural Affairs in Lyons, Nebraska.

Many smaller, targeted programs that invest in proven strategies to create rural jobs, revitalize rural communities and initiatives to foster a new generation of family farmers and ranchers were completely left out of the final farm bill extension. The eleventh hour deal also prevents farmers and ranchers from being able to improve soil and water conservation through enrollment in the Conservation Stewardship Program in 2013.

“We applaud the efforts of Senate Agriculture Chair Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and House Agriculture Chair Frank Lucas (R-OK) who negotiated an agreement last weekend to address these crucial shortcomings,” explained Hassebrook. “But, regrettably their efforts were set aside in final negotiations over the fiscal cliff bill.”

“The message is clear - despite high market prices, virtually unlimited commodity and crop insurance premium subsidies to mega farms remain uncapped, but beginning farmers and rural communities are left twisting in the wind,” concluded Hassebrook. “And conservation of our precious land and water gets put on hold.”

"This compromise and the accompanying vote were long overdue. It was imperative that Congress got together to support the bipartisan, Senate-passed legislation to avoid going over the “fiscal cliff”. In order to stop $500 billion in automatic tax increases on 99 percent of American households, prevent massive cuts, and halt interruptions in critical services, both sides had to make concessions. While this is not the bill I would have drafted and no one is likely to be happy with every provision, I understand that immediate action with the most consensus was required for the sake of strengthening the U.S. economy and protecting our fellow Americans.

It is important to note that the inability of Congress to work in a bipartisan way over the past few years to take on our toughest issues created this crisis. Unfortunately, if we fail to learn the lessons of this narrowly-averted crisis, the Congress may end right back up in a similar spot in the near future. Each member of Congress has a responsibility to work together to craft common sense solutions to the nation's challenges. We were sent here to roll up our sleeves, get to work, and build consensus on the tough issues. I hope the new Congress does a better job at that."

“While much work remains on addressing the spending side of the ledger, the fiscal cliff package that was just approved injected a good dose of certainty into our nation’s tax policy. That is a major achievement. The measure restored the $5 million exemption level for the estate tax, which was in danger of falling to just $1 million. On the minus side, the top estate tax rate increased from 35 percent to 40 percent. Permanent capital gains tax provisions that retain lower rates was a positive point, as was the inclusion of enhanced expensing provisions for businesses.

“Extension of the 2008 farm bill, however, is little more than a stop-gap measure. We are glad that a measure is in place for most of this year, but we are disappointed that Congress was unable or unwilling to roll a comprehensive five-year farm bill proposal into the fiscal cliff package. Now, it will be up to the new 113th Congress to put a new farm bill in place, and we will continue to insist on the kind of reforms that were included in the proposals approved by the Senate and the House Agriculture Committee during the 112th Congress.

“As the new Congress punches in, members already face a huge work order. While the fiscal cliff package addressed the revenue side of the equation, it did not do enough to cut federal spending in a meaningful way. Without progress on the spending side, we are on a one-way road to fiscal disaster. It is our hope that the new Congress will exercise the leadership needed to put our nation on a path toward fiscal responsibility and agricultural innovation and prosperity.”

The so-called "Fiscal Cliff" offered Congress a chance to make real changes and address our country’s looming debt crisis. Instead the politicians in Washington decided to continue to pass our problems along to future generations.

Washington leaders side-stepped the opportunity -- the obligation -- to reduce spending, keep taxes low, and create an environment where the economy can grow. They should have employed the Texas model of limited government, lower taxes and a fair and predictable regulatory climate. Unfortunately, the deal cut this week in Washington keeps America on the wrong path.

The fiscal cliff "deal" will actually increase the deficit by $4 trillion over the next decade. At some point, the spending spree in Washington must end and the longer we wait to address our nation’s debt crisis the more painful the consequences will be. The irresponsible spending in Washington will surely impact Texas--and it won't be pretty.

Washington’s refusal to use this opportunity to curb the expansion of government will undoubtedly add to my long list of litigation against the federal government. To date I have filed more than two dozen lawsuits designed to protect Texans from Washington overreach. While the federal government continues to grow, Texans can be sure that I will continue to fight them every step of the way.

The new deal raises income taxes, capital gains taxes, dividend taxes, death taxes, and payroll taxes. ... You simply can't take over $600 billion out of the private economy without serious consequences that reduce opportunities for everyone.

The worst part of this deal is that it doesn't cut spending.

The last time we faced a fiscal cliff, the deal-makers raised the debt limit and promised us they would cut spending or face and automatic, across-the-board sequester. Guess what? They lied. ...

Beyond higher taxes and more spending, the fiscal cliff deal is stuffed with all kinds of pork. This is what happens when bills are rushed through in the dark of night. We already know they stuck the farm bill in and we expect to find dozens of corporate tax breaks for President Obama's cronies.

Your senators voted for a bill they didn't read. Having the foresight and courage to oppose this horrible deal were Senators Rand Paul (R-KY), Mike Lee (R-UT), and Marco Rubio (R-FL).

Where are the rest of the conservatives?
