Pirettes blow past Lady Mustangs with strong first-half effort

Pirettes blow past Lady Mustangs with strong first-half effort
Poth’s defense kept Nixon-Smiley off balance throughout most of the game Dec. 21 in Nixon. The Pirettes dominated in the first half and held a 33-9 lead at the break before eventually winning, 51-34.

It was a much-anticipated matchup, as the No. 5-ranked Poth Pirettes traveled to Nixon Dec. 21 to take on the No. 7-ranked Lady Mustangs of Nixon-Smiley. The Pirettes were the better team on this day, though, as Poth dominated Nixon-Smiley in the first half of play, and skipped town with a 51-34 win, and the lone spot atop District 28-2A.

Poth played aggressively from the onset, utilizing its press to the fullest, forcing Nixon-Smiley into less than desirable pass options and shot opportunities. The Pirettes were aggressive at both ends of the floor, and held the Lady Mustangs to just 3 points in the first period of play, while putting up 16 of their own.

The aggression remained constant in the second period of play, as Poth continued its scoring ways with 17, while Nixon-Smiley managed just 6 points. As the teams took a breather and headed for the locker rooms, it was Poth with a clear advantage, leading 33-9.

The Lady Brahmas came out ready to play in the third, and Poth Head Coach Peggy Hosek pulled back a bit on the reins, as Nixon-Smiley outscored Poth 15-12. The Pirette lead was still quite large, and Hosek kept enough pressure on Nixon-Smiley to ever keep the team from mounting a serious threat.

The Lady Mustangs went on to outscore the Pirettes 10-6 in the final stanza, but it was still too little too late, as Poth cruised to an easy 51-34 win over Nixon-Smiley.

Senior guard Ashley Fuller led the Pirettes on the night with 16 points, followed by Jennifer Kruse, Devon Dylla, and Justine Quintanilla with 6 points apiece. Kelli Kolodziej was good for 5, and Amanda Wauters dropped in another 4.

Junior guard Alena Alvarez led the Lady Mustang effort with 17 points on the night, junior post Savannah Martinez dropped in 9 points, and a host of additional Nixon-Smiley players scored 2 points each.

The win lifts the Pirettes to 13-2 on the season, and puts Poth alone in first place with a district mark of 3-0. Nixon-Smiley is still sitting well in second place with a district mark of 3-1, and the Lady Mustangs are 14-3 on the year. The teams will play again Friday, Jan. 25, as the Pirettes host the Lady Mustangs in Poth. The playoff picture will be clearer at that point, and the outcome of the game is likely to have playoff implications. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
