Nov 30 and Dec 1

San Marcos Square, the centerpiece of Venice, is spectacular, even during high tide that dumps 12 inches of water into the square every day about 11:30 am. Luckily, this only happens in the winter months and only last a couple of hours. Temporary elevated walkways are set up to accommodate the thousands of visitors each day to make their way through the square.

The Doge’s Palace, part of the San Marcos Square, is a must see; it takes about 2 hours to go through and is incredibly interesting. The square was an easy 5-minute walk from our B&B and we went there each day. Other “must sees” are the Basilica of St. Mark and the Rialto Bridge. With a waterbus pass, we were able to travel on the Grand Canal at will; the system is easy to use and very efficient. We took a 40-minute gondola ride through some of the small canals and strolled through the narrow walkways of this city that considers itself to be one with the sea.
