About politics and other things

This is an open message to employees of the Wilson County News and to all American workers. I don’t know how you voted in the last election; I didn’t tell anyone how to vote.

I did, of course, voice my opinion about what I thought would happen if President Barack Obama was re-elected, We are just beginning to see the results of Obama’s re-election in real time, beginning with the compromise/capitulation over the media-hyped “fiscal cliff.”

You may or may not know what the fiscal cliff is all about. Perhaps you’ve been hearing about it and reading about it, but think it doesn’t affect you. This is a warning that what you have been hearing on the news has not been the full or even an honest story.

Or, perhaps you have not been paying attention to the news at all -- but I have news for you. Your next paycheck will bring it home to you, as you are facing your very own personal fiscal cliff. Up until now, everything you have heard or read about the fiscal crisis was about “saving the middle class” and making taxes more “fair” by making the rich pay more. So what happens now?

The weasels in Congress caved and agreed to sock it to the rich. How will that help the economy? Poor folks don’t hire people and create jobs. And, since neither I nor any of the WCN employees are considered rich according to this fiscal cliff “rescue package,” does that mean we have escaped the ravages of this sleazy legislation?

Think again. I know that everything in the media has been about “saving” 99 percent of American households from additional taxes. In fact, the headline on the press release sent out last week by our congressman read: Congress Acts to Protect the Middle Class.

Nothing was said about the very real tax increase that will hit every hardworking taxpayer. That is the one you are about to see on your next paycheck.

I feel bad about it, but because this fiscal cliff nonsense did not address the issue of Social Security taxes withheld, an additional 2 percent will be withheld from your next check. This could amount to about $40 a month for a salary of $25,000 to about $85 a month on a salary of $50,000.

At best, this could mean one less time to eat out for a family. Certainly, the amount is significant enough to throw off a tight family budget.

The fact is, this increase in Social Security taxes to workers is all part of the big smoke and mirrors game being played in Washington. And we middle class Americans are being used as pawns.

You see, last year Obama reduced the amount of Social Security taxes to be withheld from workers. He did this in order to win favor with voters: See. I lowered taxes for middle class Americans!

But this year, when Congress and the administration are playing hardball, taxes went back to where they were before. Now politicians argue whether or not this is a tax increase. So, is that a tax increase or not? The administration claims that it is not.

Congress saw fit to include subsidies to Hollywood producers, NASCAR, rum producers, and alternative energy such as algae and electric scooters. That was $76 billion (with a “B”) to political favorites, but nothing for the American worker.

So, when you look at your paycheck, tell me what you think. Was this a tax increase, or just an adjustment in the interest of fairness?

Well, the Obama dog and pony show had the same substance that dog and pony shows leave at the state fair. However, he did provide some fodder for Elaine's next editorial on "It's for the children."
