Editor:

“... it was not the gun that was to blame...” (for the killings of the children in Connecticut). But it was partly, no?

When my grandfather taught this then-11-year-old to shoot his pump 22 rifle at his 100-acre “poor farm” near Stockdale, I aimed at floating pecan shells in the earthen tank. I was pretty good at it. He carried this rifle on his rural mail route for years, using it for rabbits and sometimes rattlesnakes on his dirt road route. We never dreamed of armor-piercing bullets or military assault weapons. Didn’t need that for rabbits.

When I was 16 and working on my cousin’s half-section farm on the edge of the King Ranch in South Texas, we sometimes patrolled the roads at sunset, killing rattlesnakes by the score as they basked in the cooler evening. This was with a single shot 22, using rat shot. Never wished for clips holding a dozen-plus shells. Or several guns.

The killer in Connecticut, like my family, was protected by the Second Amendment. But society allowed him a lot more firepower than our Founding Fathers had in mind.

What my family had still suits me fine.
