1925-2012

Jerry O’Leary Passmore Sr., 87, of Crossville, Tenn., and formerly of Dallas, Texas, passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at 2:15 a.m. in the Cookeville Regional Medical Center in Cookeville, Tenn.

Jerry was born March 13, 1925, in Dallas. He grew up in Dallas, where he went to school until 1938, when he transferred to San Marcos Military Academy. There he began his passion in photography. He returned to Dallas in 1939 to attend Crozier Technical High School, but never graduated due to his enlistment in the U.S. Army in June 1943 at the age of 18. He was assigned to Company I, 411th Infantry, 103d Division to Europe during World War II. He was wounded in action on Nov. 20, 1944, and awarded the Purple Heart by Col. Yeuell at the 36th General Hospital in France. He received an Honorary Discharge from the Army on Aug. 25, 1945.

Jerry was married to Bernice M. (Taylor) Passmore on Feb. 25, 1951; they were married 61 years.

Jerry worked as a projectionist and stage hand for Local 249 and 127, respectively. He and Bernice retired and moved to their dream home in Crossville, Tenn., in August 1991.

He enjoyed repairing old clocks and making various things for friends and family out of wood. Before retiring, he was also actively involved in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts as a Cubmaster and Scoutmaster, respectively. He was a beekeeper and a member of the Dallas Metropolitan Masonic Lodge No. 1182 AF&AM.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elathea Richardson Passmore and Frederick Allen Passmore Sr., formerly of Dallas; his brother, Fred Passmore Jr., formerly of Dallas; his sisters, Frances Passmore Nass, formerly of Fort Worth, and Mary Ann Passmore Pollock Wessels, formerly of Bremmerton, Wa.; and his grandson, William “Randy” Huffer of Kokomo, Ind.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Bernice Passmore; his four children, Judith Ann Passmore Huffer and husband Richard, Jerry O’Leary Passmore Jr. and wife JoAnn, Thomas Eugene Passmore and wife Cynthia, and Mary Ellen McGlaun and husband Mark; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation was held Tuesday, Jan. 8, from 6-8 p.m. in the Franklin Funeral Home in Floresville, Texas.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home chapel.

Interment will follow Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142; or Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, 2222 Welborn St., Dallas, TX 75219.
