La Vernia Connections: LVISD enhancements, activities for 2013
By Dr. Tom Harvey
The LVISD faculty and staff returned from the Christmas break last week and started 2013 with two exciting days of training. The training was specifically devoted to improving the technological skills of the entire staff. This training will assist the district in meeting the needs of its growing student population. The training was multifaceted and was well-received.
Additionally, during the break, enhancements to the technology infrastructure were competed. This included the addition of hundreds of computing devices and other hardware items across the district with enhancements at every campus. The capacity of the computer network and servers was increased and made more robust. With the addition of an expanded MDF room, students and staff will be able to better access the Internet and cloud resources. The multiple air conditioning units will provide protection for the district servers and allow for the addition of other servers in the future.
January is officially Texas School Board Appreciation Month. The LVISD students, staff, and community are well-served by their trustees. The trustees volunteer many hours of time to fulfill their roles in a growing and successful school district. As superintendent of our school, I want to thank each member and applaud their efforts and service to our children.
The spring semester always brings new athletic and extracurricular activities, including UIL Academic endeavors, the History Fair, Speech and Debate Tournaments, and others. However, it is also typically a time where we see more illness -- sniffles, colds, and sometimes even influenza.
Our nurse, Kasey Dickson, has encouraged the staff to consider getting influenza shots on a number of occasions. She also advises the staff to stay home when they are ill, as the spread of germs will infect others. This is a good reminder for our students and parents too. A feverish child will not perform well at school and should stay home when they are infectious.
Our students continue to amaze me with their talents. I hope you will accept my invitation to attend our events that highlight their skills. I believe you will be as thrilled as I am. For example -- many of our intermediate campus students will perform at a PTO meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 15. And, on Thursday, Jan. 17, the same campus will be hosting a Math/Science Night. Many other campus and district activities are on the way too.
Dr. Tom Harvey is the superintendent of the La Vernia Independent School District.
