BASTROP -- While most of their high school friends were enjoying the Christmas break, the Poth Pirettes were headed to Bastrop to participate in the 19th annual G.M. Blackman Basketball Tournament Dec. 28-29.

The Pirettes’ first game was against Class 4A Vandegrift. The Pirettes had a 25-21 lead at half and a 42-35 at the end of the third, but a surge by the Lady Vipers pulled Vandegrift to within 4 points in the fourth. The Pirettes eventually put the game away with free throws and won 56-48. Ashley Fuller led all scorers with 27 points in the game. Poth senior Annika Eckel added another 8 points for the Pirettes.

The Pirettes next faced top-seeded Class 5A opponent Round Rock Stony Point. The team was down 19-9 at the end of the first quarter but pulled to within 1 in the second with a 24-23 score, before ending the half down 37-27. The Pirettes struggled with the Lady Tigers’ size and were beat on the boards. The Pirettes fell 62-46, and the Lady Tigers went on to win the tournament.

The loss to Stony Point moved the Pirettes to the white bracket, where they faced Class 3A Smithville. This game proved to be a challenge as well, lasting one hour and 45 minutes. Five players fouled out between the two teams, and the officials also gave technical fouls. When all was said and done, the Pirettes came out on top, 62-57. Fuller led the scoring with 31 points, and Justine Quintanilla added 8 points.

Playing in the white bracket championship, the Pirettes faced off against another Class 5A team in Killeen. A very slow tempo first quarter ended with a 7-7 tie. The Pirettes picked up the pace and were leading 21-17 at the half. The team struggled in the second half, and, unable to gain a rhythm or momentum, eventually fell to the Lady Roos, 48-39. Fuller scored 16 in the losing effort, and Kelli Kolodziej added another 11 points.

“This was a good tournament for us,” said Poth Head Coach Peggy Hosek. “We had lots of opportunities to learn about the game. The team competed well, and I am very proud of them and their performance this weekend.”

Following the tournament, the Pirettes stood at 15-4 on the season, and were 3-0 in district play. The Pirettes were set to return to action Jan. 4 against Hallettsville.
