Henry P. Mendoza, a lifelong resident of Floresville, Texas, entered eternal rest Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at 11 a.m. surrounded by his loving family in his residence in Floresville, at the age of 87 years, 1 month, and 17 days. Henry was born to Paulino and Ernestina Peña Mendoza on Nov. 17, 1925, in Goliad.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Henry married Mary Esther Garza on Jan. 2, 1949, in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville, where he was a lifelong member. Henry faithfully worked for 35 years as an aircraft mechanic with Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio. He was a jack-of-all-trades who did most things himself. He also enjoyed camping and fishing. Henry especially loved sports and his beloved Dallas Cowboys, but most of all he loved spending time with his family.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Lionel Mendoza and Octavio Mendoza; and his sister, Maria Garcia.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Mary Esther Mendoza of Floresville; his sons, Paul Mendoza and Joe Mendoza, both of Floresville; his daughter, Shirley Mendoza of Floresville; his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Josef, Shirley, and Marc, all of Floresville; his great-grandchildren, Josef Paul, Zoe Daniella, and Vincent Sebastian; his brothers, David Mendoza of Beeville and Paul Mendoza of Rosenberg; and his sisters, Elida Loya and Carmen Garcia, both of Beeville.

Visitation was held on Thursday, Jan. 10, at 5 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville. A funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday at 8 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville, officiated by the Rev. Phillip Henning.

Interment with military honors followed in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

Serving as pallbearers were Paul Mendoza, Joe Mendoza, Josef Lee Rendon, Marc Mendoza, David Ortiz, and Joe Hernandez.

Serving as honorary pallbearers were Josef Paul Rendon and Vincent Sebastian Mendoza.
