Anita Marie Sibley
Anita Marie Sibley, 83, of Elmendorf, Texas, left this earthly life on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, after succumbing to complications from her brave battle with cancer. Born July 14, 1929, in San Antonio, she was the youngest child of Reecie (Teresa Stefflre) and John Allan Emery.
Anita was a 1947 graduate of St. Gerard High School and attended Draughon’s Business College, after which she worked for B&M Mattress Co., Ace Brake, and the Clegg Company. She married Leslie W. Sibley on Aug. 18, 1950, and they were blessed with five children. After living her entire life in San Antonio, Anita moved to Elmendorf in 1992. She retired in 1994 after working more than 20 years as the bursar at St. Gerard High School. Anita served as lector and Eucharistic minister for both St. Benedict’s and St. Anthony’s; was a member of both parishes’ Altar Societies; volunteered at the San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind and at the Connally Memorial Medical Center in Floresville; and was an active member of the St. Benedict’s Widowed Persons and the Ostomy Association of South Texas support groups. She was known by all as a loving and caring mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend who was an avid reader, and one who loved puzzles, games, and crosswords.
A devout Catholic, Anita wanted to remind us all that “death is not extinguishing the light; it is putting out the lamp because the dawn has come.”
Anita was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie; daughter Phyllis; and son Gerald.
She is survived by son Roger Sibley and wife Irene of Elmendorf, daughter Judy White and husband Darrell of Fair Oaks Ranch, and son Brian Sibley of Lawton, Okla.; grandchildren Joseph, Alison, Michael, Charles and wife Rebecca, and Kelly Gazzana and husband Anthony; great-granddaughter Izabella; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Viewing was held on Sunday, Jan. 13, from 6-9 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. in the Mission Park Funeral Chapels South in San Antonio.
A funeral Mass was held on Monday at 1 p.m. in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Elmendorf.
Interment will be held on Thursday, Jan. 17, at noon in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
Memorial donations may be made to Allied Women’s Center, 102 Marshall St., San Antonio, TX 78212; or to a charity of one’s choice.
