LA VERNIA -- The La Vernia City Council members continue to prepare for the arrival of the La Vernia Crossing shopping center, being built at the intersection of U.S. 87 and F.M. 1346, across from H-E-B.
During the Jan. 10 city council meeting, council members D. Bradford Beck, Eloi Cormier, Randy Leonard, John F. Richter, Bobby Richter, and Mayor Robert Gregory discussed the parking lot situation for the La Vernia Crossing development.
The council approved to grant a variance, so parking spaces may be reduced in length from 20 feet to 18 feet. The spaces will remain at 10 feet in width. The driving lanes between parking spaces will remain at 25 feet.
According to City Secretary/Treasurer Angela Cantu, the only business currently confirmed in the shopping center is a Golden Chick restaurant. However, the council plans for many other businesses to locate in La Vernia Crossing, as well.
Also at the meeting, the council approved the adoption of a fee for flood damage prevention for those seeking building permits. Those who wish to build, whether commercial or residential buildings, will complete an application and have their property inspected by a code compliance officer to see if the land is in a flood plain. This will incur a $25 administrative fee. The inspection also will show if other studies of the area are necessary.
In other business, the council also approved an amendment and renewal agreement between the city of La Vernia and IESI Corp. for trash service. However, a recycling program discussed in previous council meetings did not receive council approval, so was not part of the agreement. Waste collection fees in the city will remain the same for the time being.
