UVALDE -- The Floresville Tiger basketball team hit the road to Uvalde to take on the Coyotes in District 29-4A play. The Tigers played well, and picked up a 72-53 win.

Floresville got off to a good start with senior Jaron Medina hitting the first three baskets for the Tigers. The Tigers ended the first quarter with a 14-point lead. Floresville continued to build on that lead in the second period, and went into halftime with an 18-point lead.

The Coyotes showed a little life in the second half as the Tigers shot poorly from the free-throw line. Derek Moczygemba kept the momentum on the Tigers’ side, however, finishing with five steals, defensively.

Overall, the Tigers finished with four players in double-digit scoring, including Estevan Mendiola with 17, Charlie Albert with 14, Medina with 13, and Vernon Marsh with 10.

Floresville’s overall record improved to 15-8, while the Tigers moved to 3-1 in district play.

The Tigers then played at home last Friday night, hosting the Medina Valley Panthers. Medina Valley’s record stood at 13-6 overall, and 3-1 in district play, putting the teams in a tie for second in the district. Floresville Head Coach Coy Tackitt had his team prepared for a tough game.

The Tigers came out a little slow, allowing the Panthers to score the first couple of baskets, but Floresville picked up the pace and ended the first quarter with a 13-8 lead. The Tigers continued to build on their lead throughout the half, and eventually sent the Panthers into the locker room down by 7 points.

The Tigers came out in the third quarter ready to play, and pounced on the Panthers. By hitting some easy shots, playing aggressive defense, controlling the boards, and going 6-of-6 from the free-throw line, the Tigers outplayed and outscored the Panthers 20-8 in the third quarter. Floresville continued to control the game throughout the fourth quarter, as well, finishing with a big win, 59-33.

The Tigers finished with two players in double digits, as Albert scored 13 points, and Mendiola added another 10. Albert also grabbed nine rebounds and finished the game with four blocks. Defensively, the Tigers had three players finishing with three steals apiece, including Medina, Moczygemba, and Darren Orth. Go Tigers Go!

Floresville was set to resume district play Jan. 15 against the Kennedy Rockets.
