Each week students at Floresville North Elementary School are faced with a new challenge ... Rachel’s Challenge. Each challenge encourages the students and staff to remember that simple acts of kindness may lead to a chain reaction of kindness.

Rachel’s Challenge is a series of student-empowering programs and strategies that equip students and adults to combat bullying and allay feelings of isolation and despair by creating a culture of kindness and compassion. Shortly before her death, Rachel Joy Scott, a student whose life was cut tragically short during the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, wrote,

“I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go.”

It is our hope that both students and staff will learn more about how important it is to be kind and helpful toward each other and the people that we meet in the community. We want to help start a chain reaction of kindness in our homes, schools, and community to make our world a better place.

Students were given six helping hands recently to pass on to someone who needed a helping hand. They wrote their name on the hands and, when they saw someone who needed help, they gave them one of their hands by reaching out to that person with kindness and compassion. The person who received the helping hand taped it to one of the eight trees we have in the school.

Students are learning that simple acts of kindness do not cost much, yet they can start a chain reaction of kindness in our school. Make a difference in someone’s life today!
