Today, we are in Cannes, France. This is the location of the most famous film festival in the world and for us, the gateway to Monte Carlo, Monaco. Monaco, a tiny principality that has been governed by the Grimaldi Family since 1308, most notably ruled by Prince Rainier and his beautiful American wife, Grace Kelly. Now, power is in the hands of their son, Albert II.

Beautiful villas and gardens grace the winding streets of this French Riviera town. Although it had a turbulent history, today it is the picture of peace and stability. In Monte Carlo there is no unemployment and no poverty.

We visited the Jacques Cousteau Oceanographic Museum and the St. Nicholas Cathedral, built in the 13th century and the site of wedding of Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly in 1956. Both the Prince and his wife are interred inside the Cathedral. We visited the Monte Carlo Casino, better known as the casino for James Bond’s famous martini order, “Shaken, not stirred.” The casino is unbelievably opulent and a joy to walk through.
