FLORESVILLE -- Still reeling from the state Legislature’s massive school-funding cuts in 2011, the Floresville Independent School District (ISD) board has spoken out by passing a resolution against school vouchers Jan. 15 (see PDF download of resolution below).

The idea behind school vouchers involves redirecting the per-child cost of education at a public school to parents, who will use those funds to finance their child’s education elsewhere.

“Please understand that we believe every child, parent, and taxpayer of Floresville should have a choice of where to place their child and monies,” said Floresville ISD Superintendent Jerry Lee Hunkapiller after the meeting. “What we are against is a mechanism that will take money from Floresville ISD and place it in someone else’s care that is not held to the same standards. To give a voucher to a private school that does not include having to meet the same state testing and accountability system as FISD is complete hypocrisy.”

He continued, “We must all understand private schools are able to choose their parents and kids. FISD is proud to provide character, knowledge, and confidence to all children. The community of Floresville expects nothing less.”

Also during the meeting, the board discussed reorganization, deciding to retain its current slate of officers:

•Ryan Bippert, president

•John Raabe, vice president

•Neysa Choate, secretary

•Rachel Peña, treasurer.

In other business, the board tabled items related to the district’s 2011-12 financial audit. Kim Cathey, the superintendent’s secretary, said after the meeting that the audit report had not been completed and that a special meeting to review the document was set for Monday, Jan. 21.
