Immanuel Lutheran Church is now hiring for a Youth and Family Ministry Director. Pastoral: Minister to youth and their families during Sunday School and other church programs, being present in their lives outside the church walls, available for common concerns and in crisis situations. Leadership: Recruit and nurture Youth and Family Ministry program. Administration : Manage the planning process and coordinate with Pastor and Youth Committee all regular ministries to youth and their families. This includes youth of all ages on Sunday mornings and mid-week events; assisting with Confirmation, special events, trips and retreats, and parent meetings. Stewardship: Ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of youth programs, manage youth ministry budget, and collaborate with the sponsors of each Youth group. Ability to build, lead, and empower youth. Ability to implement a ministry vision. Familiarity with Lutheran Doctrine required; must be comfortable teaching it and representing Lutheran Theology. Proficient computer skills using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, database, email, internet, and social media. Supervisory experience preferred. Ability to adapt and evaluate curriculum preferred. Must have excellent organization, communication (verbal and written), and listening skills, with a high degree of initiative and accountability. Exceptional interpersonal and relational skills required, with sensitivity to church members and visitors. Understanding and enjoyment of youth and families and guiding their spiritual development. 1940-2013

Julius Matthew Akrie departed this life during the morning hours of Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, in the Regency Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Floresville, Texas. Julius was born on June 29, 1940, in Pittsburgh, Pa., the oldest born to the union of Julius and Catherine Sherrell Akrie.

He grew up in the Manchester neighborhood of Pittsburgh, and was educated in the Pittsburgh public and Catholic school systems. After graduation, Julius joined the U.S. Army. Upon his honorable discharge, he met and married Barbara Ann House. To this union two daughters were born, Bernadette Lynn and Dawn Janene. While in Pittsburgh, he was a faithful member of the Holy Innocents Church. Julius was employed as an LPN at the VA hospital in Aspinwall, Pa. He remained at this position until his relocation to Texas. He continued to be an active member of the U.S. Army Reserve.

Upon his arrival to Texas, he was an LPN at the Memorial Medical Center and an active member in the U.S. Army Reserve. He later met Arby Clemons and had a son named Julius Matthew. In 2004, he met and married Velia Mendoza. Julius had a love for children and fishing. After completing 12 years, he retired from the Army Reserve and started doing private duty as a nurse for children with special needs.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Dawn J. Akrie; a sister, Catherine Sherrell; and a brother, Robert Charles.

Julius is survived by his wife, Velia Mendoza Akrie; a daughter, Bernadette Lynn Akrie of Pittsburgh; a son, Julius Matthew Johnson Jr. of San Antonio; a brother, Jon Ricard Akrie of Houston; stepdaughters Lettie Garcia and husband Roberto and Chelo Harris and husband Don; stepson Martin Ramirez and wife Melissa; 20 grandchildren; great-grandson Julian Matthew of Pittsburgh; great-granddaughters Justice Kennedi of Charlotte, N.C., and Ariah Faith of San Antonio; uncles Harold Akrie of Pittsburgh and Costell Akrie of Rumsey, Ca.; and a host of family and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. in the Franklin Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville.

A graveside service will be held on Friday at 9:45 a.m. in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio with Chaplain Elias Campos to officiate.

Serving as pallbearers will be Julius Johnson, Donald Harris, Martin Ramirez, Roberto Garcia, Zenon Cuellar, and Jon Ricard Akrie.
