1917-2013

Cloma Jackson, 96, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, in San Antonio. She was born Jan. 19, 1917, in Wilson County, Texas, to Thomas and Elpie Luker.

She loved her family above all else. Cloma was a teacher with the San Antonio Independent School District for 50 years. Over the years she wisely invested her modest earnings. She donated land to friends to help start a church, and also gave land for Jackson Nature Park on the Cibolo Creek near Stockdale in Wilson County. In gratitude for her outstanding teaching career and as a public benefactor, this “Wilson County girl” was nominated by state Rep. Ed Kuempel and Wilson County Judge Marvin Quinney for the Yellow Rose of Texas award, which was presented to her, signed by the governor of Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Z.B. Jackson; sons Jimmy Bert Jackson and Carlton Ray Jackson; grandson Jason Todd Jackson; and four siblings, Gilbert, Adeline, J.R., and Thomas.

Cloma is survived by her grandchildren, Ray Jackson and Dana Hooker and husband David; great-granddaughter Peyton Hooker; daughter-in-law Barbara Jackson; sister Veda Smith; good friend Colleen Clayton; numerous nieces and nephews; and Cloma’s friend and caregiver, Laura Castellanos and family.

Visitation was held on Sunday, Jan. 27, from 5-7 p.m. in the Porter Loring Mortuary North in San Antonio.

A funeral service was held Monday at 11 a.m. in the Abiding Presence Lutheran Church in San Antonio with the Rev. Dawn Silvius officiating.

Interment followed at 2:30 p.m. in the Stockdale Cemetery in Stockdale.
