Joe T. Garcia, a lifelong resident of Floresville, Texas, entered eternal rest on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at 10:40 a.m. in the Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home in Floresville, at the age of 88 years, 4 months, and 22 days. Joe was born Aug. 27, 1924, in Karnes City, the son of Manuel and Elvira Torres Garcia. Joe attended Labatt School and was a truck driver. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of more than 57 years, Remedios “Ruby” R. Garcia on March 1, 2006; his parents; his grandson, Dhani Abbott; his daughter-in-law, Janice Garcia; and his siblings, Amadio Garcia, Esparanza Carillo, Delmarie Jiminez, and Calixtro Garcia.

Joe is survived by his children, Jo Ann Herrera and husband Ted, Mary Ellen Serna and husband Gilbert Figueroa, Jose T. Garcia and wife Janie, Gilbert Garcia, Susan Garcia Perez, John Garcia and wife Claudia Ibarra, and Joseph B. Garcia and wife Sonia Guerrero; his grandchildren, Jo Anna Herrera, Joaquin Herrera, Gail Lynn Foreman, Galen Abbott, Caitlin Dockery, Diego Perez, Victoria Villalpondo, Jeff Burchell, Melinda Minker, Albert Figueroa, Felicia Luczkow, and Amity Figueroa; his great-grandchildren, Jahred, Brandon, Natasha, Sammy, Joaquin Zapata, Quentin, Galen, Anthony, Alicia, Chance, Monique, Vanessa, Jacquelyne, Jocelyne, Conor, Ethan, Liam, Dante, Donovan, and Layla; and his siblings, Manuel Garcia and Soila Sanchez.

Visitation was held on Sunday, Jan. 20, at 5 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday at 10 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville, officiated by the Rev. Stefan Wiera.

Interment followed in the Cañada Verde Cemetery in Wilson County.

Serving as pallbearers were Joaquin Herrera, Joseph Garcia, Jeff Burchell, Anthony Burchell, Robert Villalpondo, and Chance Pfeil.
