Traffic stop nets meth, fugitive
FLORESVILLE -- A wanted fugitive from San Antonio is being held in the Wilson County Jail after being arrested here Jan. 24 by officers from the Floresville Police Department.
Hugo Avila Cruz, 32, is charged with possession of less than 1 gram of a controlled substance in Penalty Group 1 and failure to identify, for which jail records indicate he is being held on a total of $9,000 bond.
According to the arresting officer, Floresville Patrolman Kevin Swinehart, Cruz also had seven arrest warrants from Bexar County. Jail records indicate that those warrants charge him with possession of less than 1 gram of a controlled substance in Penalty Group 1, failure to stop and render aid, assault causing bodily injury, driving while intoxicated, and three counts of theft by check worth more than $20 but less than $500. Three of the Bexar County warrants stipulate that Cruz be held with no bond, while bonds on the remaining four total $62,200.
Swinehart said that at approximately 1 p.m., a red dually pickup truck that was missing a rear mud flap passed him on U.S. 181. During a subsequent traffic stop, Cruz -- who allegedly gave officers a fictitious name -- was found to be without a driver license. During their investigation, Swinehart and fellow Floresville Patrolman John Muñoz found drug paraphernalia in Cruz’s pocket, which gave the officers probable cause to search the truck.
Inside the vehicle, officers reported finding two small baggies of methamphetamine, and a wallet containing proof of Cruz’s actual identity.
