Stockdale powerlifters win hardware in Yoakum, Poteet
STOCKDALE -- The powerlifting season is still young, but the Brahmas and Lady Brahmas are hitting the weight rooms hard, and are already seeing the fruits of their labors.
The team recently competed in two powerlifting meets, the first of which involved a trip to Yoakum Jan. 12. It was a great first effort for the team, and every lifter finished at or near the top of their weight class.
On the guys side, senior Darion McMahan picked up right where he left off last year, finishing first in the 148-pound class with a three-lift total of 1,245 pounds. With a bench press of 300 pounds, a deadlift of 470, and squat of 475 pounds, he easily won the weight class and was named as the outstanding lightweight lifter of the meet.
Teammate Matt Valadez, who, like McMahan, made a trip to the state meet last year, looked good in the 165-pound class, finishing second with an overall weight of 1,150 pounds. Valadez turned in a bench press of 260 pounds, a squat of 430, and a dead lift of 460 pounds. Conner McLaughlin also earned a second-place finish while competing in the 181-pound class with a three-lift total of 1,095 pounds. His bench press of 275, squat of 355, and deadlift of 465 was good enough to win a silver medal.
Also participating for Stockdale was Devin McMahan, as he competed in the 123-pound class. Devin put together a three-lift performance of 660 pounds, earning him a fifth-place finish in his first meet. Devin had a bench press of 160 pounds, a squat of 215, and a deadlift of 285 pounds.
On the girls side, the Lady Brahmas all finished first, second, or third in their classes, earning a third-place team medal in the process. Katelyn Shaver led the way for the ladies with her first-place finish, lifting a total of 525 pounds. Her bench press of 95 pounds, squat of 180, and deadlift of 250 was enough to edge teammate Makaley Perez in the same weight class. Perez had a better bench press at 100 pounds, but trailed in the other events with a squat of 170, and a deadlift of 185. Kristen Moore won a silver medal in her weight class with a total lift of 575 pounds, managing 110 pounds on the bench press, 205 in the squat rack, and 260 in the deadlift. Lacey Dugi rounded out the Lady Brahma effort with a third-place finish in her class. She lifted 80 pounds on the bench, 185 in the squat, and 225 in the deadlift for a total of 490 pounds.
The team then traveled to Poteet Jan. 19 to compete in its second meet of the season. Several lifters still took home awards, but a couple “bombed out,” as well.
On the guys side, Valadez backed up his second-place finish in Yoakum with another second-place finish in Poteet. He added 50 pounds to his three-lift total, and finished with an even 1,200 pounds. McLaughlin improved his total by 65 pounds, but managed only a fifth-place finish among a more crowded field of competitors. Devin McMahan upped his total by 70 pounds to 730 total, and Joaquin Munoz participated for Stockdale and turned in a total of 695 pounds. Darion McMahan, the state champion from last year, had a rough go in Poteet, though. He upped his squat total from 475 pounds to a whopping 500, but “bombed out” on his next event, failing to lock out the weight in three attempts.
On the girls side, Dugi was also a victim of a “bomb out,” though she is likely to come on strong in her next meet. Meanwhile, Moore won another gold for the Lady Brahmas with her three-lift total of 610 pounds, Shaver won a bronze with 555 total pounds, and Perez finished fifth in the same weight class with 525 total pounds.
