The town of Fatima is our destination today to visit Our Lady of Fatima Basilica. Our tour took us from the harbor through the city of Lisbon, and past the beautiful aqueduct built in 1746, made up of 109 stone arches to bring clean drinking water to Lisbon. After a beautiful 65 miles scenic drive we arrived in Fatima.
A shrine marks the place where the Virgin Mary appeared to three children on May 13, 1917 with a special message -- pray for peace. This is one of the most visited pilgrimage centers in the world. It is said that the area between the original neo-classical basilica and the modern Church of the Holy Trinity, completed in 2004, can hold twice as many people as St. Peter’s Square in Rome. During the week of May 13th every year, the square is full. It must be an awesome site.
The highlight of Fatima for us was attending afternoon Mass at the old Basilica. |
