Tuesday night’s special Floresville City Council meeting turned out a bellicose audience that hurled insults at those who might want to terminate the city manager’s contract.

Unfortunately, the new mayor was not prepared to follow through on Robert’s Rules of Order in the face of such an orchestrated crowd. This new council, in its effort to prove its openness and transparency, let things get out of hand.

There’s a difference between transparency and just out of order. Rude and personal remarks are always out of order, according to Robert’s Rules. As anyone can see from the video, which is available on our website, the meeting was filled with personal remarks, foul language, and a hearty amount of venom and misinformation specifically aimed at one councilman. This behavior should have been halted by the mayor’s gavel.

Lost in all the brouhaha Tuesday night was any real discussion about how the city would go about regaining its solvency. Instead, it was all about people who wanted to keep their jobs. How the city would or could pay its bills was not on their radar. It remains that cuts still must be made.

Forget the “professional fees” that everyone was focusing on. Think about the payment of $1.756 million coming due on the Event Center in 2016.

This is real, folks.

To enforce Robert's Rules you first have to know them.
