(Revised 2-6-13)

Last week’s hearings on gun violence presented yet another glimpse of rampant media bias toward gun control. The hearings were part of the follow-up to the horrific massacre of 26 people by a crazed gunman at a school in Connecticut in December.

The Obama administration immediately recognized this as an opportunity to accomplish what they “otherwise would have been unable to do.” The administration wasted no time in exploiting this tragedy, following the direction of Rahm Emanuel, then Barack Obama’s White House Chief of Staff, who advised: “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.”

Certainly, this was a crisis ready to be exploited, with the sheer magnitude of losing 20 precious young lives. Filled with raw emotion, the anti-gun forces are using this tragedy to try and accomplish their long-held goal of imposing gun control on American society.

Despite the best efforts of the Obama administration, Hollywood, and the media, the National Rifle Association (NRA) is still viewed favorably among Americans. Wayne LaPierre, the executive vice president and CEO of the NRA, was interviewed last week about his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on gun violence.

We need to punish criminals and enforce laws already on the books, he said. As for background checks, he said the problem is that you’re never going to get criminals to go through universal background checks.

To which Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., admonished LaPierre: “You miss the point completely.”

Durbin was practically giddy: Criminals will not go to purchase the guns because there will be a background check. “It will stop them from the original purchase,” he said.

That was the end of the subject, as the camera faded away. While some viewers may have accepted the fact that it would be a good thing to “deter criminals from buying guns,” others were undoubtedly incredulous: Criminals intent on murder and mayhem would be stopped from buying a gun?

This conclusion defies logic.

To criminals such as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, the Connecticut mass killer, another law would have done nothing to stop him. Here are some of the laws he broke: He was not of legal age to possess a handgun; in Connecticut, you have to be 21. He did not have a permit to carry. He did not buy the weapons; he stole them. Stealing is already against the law. He murdered his own mother; murder is against the law. He took weapons into a gun-free school, breaking another law. How would one more law have helped?

No. The anti-gun folks would ignore common sense presented by LaPierre as they demonize him, the NRA, and all who support proper gun ownership. Instead, they went gaga over the emotional testimony of the petite and passionate Gabby Giffords: “Violence is a big problem. Too many children are dying ... we must do something.”

The former member of the House of Representatives from Arizona was shot two years ago by a crazed person, who also wounded 13 and killed six. Of course, Giffords’ emotionally charged statement makes better video than does LaPierre’s stern-faced testimony.

Despite all this, a new Forbes Insights study shows that the NRA is winning the influence battle over gun control. The recent study found that the influential NRA and the pro-gun rights voices will continue to be strong.

Meanwhile, our Homeland Security put out a training video, urging Americans to arm themselves “with scissors” if they find themselves a potential victim of a shooting. They are advised to hide and wait for officers (people with guns) to arrive.

Perhaps if the Connecticut school personnel had armed themselves with scissors, 26 lives would not have been lost. Is that the point?

Be careful: "I haven’t bought any GE guns or ammo" must prove that GE does not make arms....just because you haven't seen or done something is reason for it to be true and factual...talk about crap.
