Sharon Ann Thigpen Hays
Sharon Ann Thigpen Hays went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at the age of 70 years, 2 months, and 8 days. She was born in Graham, Texas, on Nov. 22, 1942, to Forrest Lee and Juanita DeFayne Blount Thigpen.
She was a former resident of Graham and LaMarque, and a resident of Sutherland Springs for 24 years. Sharon graduated from Graham High School and went on to graduate from Texas Woman’s University with a degree in sociology and psychology. She worked for Texas Department of Human Resources for 30 years. She was very devoted to whatever cause she worked for and worked for many during her life. She was very active in the First Baptist Church in LaMarque and extremely involved in her present church family of Northview Baptist Church in Floresville. Her deepest love in Northview Baptist Church was for the children. She was the one who organized and began the Children’s Church Ministry and was also the leader in its Sunday school program. She will be deeply missed by the children she loved and mentored. She was also a member of the L.O.T.C. Ladies Group at the church and led the programs for its Easter and Fall Festival children’s parties. Sharon was also very active in the Sutherland Springs Cemetery Association and the Sutherland Springs Museum organization. Above all of her involvement in these organizations, Sharon was also the caregiver for her beloved husband, Johnny Hays, and her best friend and mother, DeFayne Thigpen, during their recent illnesses. And with all of this, Sharon was always the first one to be there to help someone in need or going through problems with kind encouraging words and usually some food for them.
She was preceded in death by her father, Forrest Lee Thigpen; brother Fred Thigpen; and sister-in-law Nancy Faust Thigpen.
Sharon is survived by her loving husband, John “Johnny” Allen Hays of Sutherland Springs; mother DeFayne Thigpen of Sutherland Springs; children Kim Phillips and husband Mark of Texarkana, Susan Belanger and husband Bob of New Braunfels, and Lance Clem and wife Jennifer of Texas City; grandchildren Zach Gilliam, Len Belanger, Lane Belanger, Logan Belanger, Kristin Clem, and Sarah Clem; great-granddaughter Emily Charter; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Visitation was held on Friday, Feb. 1, from 6-8 p.m. in the Franklin Funeral Home in Floresville.
A funeral service was held on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the Franklin Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chuck Jennings officiating. “I Bowed My Knees and Cried Holy” was sung by Mickey McCarter.
Interment followed in the Sutherland Springs Cemetery in Sutherland Springs.
Serving as pallbearers were Lance Clem, Bob Belanger, Mark Phillips, Zach Gilliam, John Thomas Hays, Randy Boeselt, Darrell Boeselt, and Pierce Johnson.
Honorary pallbearer was Tyler Bigler.
