Committee crafts job description for new FEDC exec

FLORESVILLE -- It is yet unknown who will succeed Jesse Perez as the executive director of the Floresville Economic Development Corp. (FEDC). But whoever the FEDC’s board selects, he or she will live locally, according to a recommendation that a search committee approved at a Jan. 30 meeting.
The committee -- which includes FEDC board members David Strozier, Mary Helen Tieken, Mike Herry, and Andy Eubanks -- was set to report its recommendations to the full board at its Feb. 4 meeting.
The committee consulted the job descriptions of executive directors from economic development corporations in several Texas cities, from which they crafted a description for Perez’s successor.
“The Texas Economic Development Council said the average salary [for an executive director] is estimated at $100,000 [per year],” Tieken said. “There’s no way this city could afford that.”
Tieken also said that Perez, who worked for the FEDC for more than a decade, never had a formal job description.
“[Perez] was flying by the seat of his pants; it wasn’t his fault,” she said. “If you come into a job, you shouldn’t have to write your own job decription.”
With regard to the residency requirement, the committee suggested that the new executive director should reside within the boundaries of the Floresville Independent School District, either upon hiring or within six months after accepting the position. The committee also decided that the new executive director would be required to maintain a satisfactory working relationship with members of the news media.
