The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Highway Patrol is investigating two recent Wilson County traffic accidents in which youngsters were injured.
On Jan. 28, two were flown via AirLife helicopter to University Hospital in San Antonio after being among those involved in a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of U.S. 87 and C.R. 361 near La Vernia. DPS Cpl. Javier Reyes said that Trooper Corey Holmes’ report indicates that a 2008 Ford Fusion driven by 17-year-old Erika Chivers of Adkins was traveling north on U.S. 87 at approximately 5:10 p.m.
Her vehicle struck the rear of a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by 16-year-old Alexis Sollars of La Vernia, which was stopped behind a 2007 Mazda 3 driven by 15-year-old Skyler Wilson of La Vernia. Reyes said Wilson -- whose passengers were 47-year-old Beth Derby and a 10-year-old boy -- was attempting to make a right turn onto C.R. 361.
Reyes said Chivers and her 12-year-old passenger were flown to University Hospital, while her 15-year-old passenger was transported by the La Vernia Emergency Medical Services to Northeast Baptist Hospital. No further information was available about their conditions.
Chivers was cited for failure to control speed, Reyes said.
Issued a citation for failure to control speed in a separate crash at 7:09 a.m. Jan. 30 on S.H. 123 near the intersection of F.M. 1347 outside Denhawken was 49-year-old Elliot Brown of San Antonio. This was after Brown’s semi tractor, which was towing an empty tanker trailer -- owned by The Woodlands-based Connect Transport -- struck the rear of a Poth Independent School District school bus as its driver was stopping to pick up students.
According to Reyes’ report, both vehicles were traveling northbound on S.H. 123. Neither Brown nor the bus’s driver, 42-year-old Kimberly Martinez of Poth, was injured. Two students, a 7-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy, suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene by emergency medical services personnel.
