Tigers remain atop district with two recent victories
Floresville senior Darren Orth (25) drives to the hoop during the Tigers’ Feb. 1 win over Uvalde.
FLORESVILLE -- The Tiger basketball team started its week by playing the Memorial Minutemen (2-7) last Tuesday at Edgewood Gym.
The Tigers came out ready to play, shooting well and hitting seven 3-pointers in the first half. Floresville went into the locker room with an 18-point lead.
The pace slowed some in the second half, as the Tigers’ perimeter shooting cooled off and Memorial outscored Floresville 15-9 in the third quarter. However, the Tigers turned to their inside game and finished off the Minutemen with a win, 67-53.
Jaron Medina ran the Tiger offense well, leading the team with 7 assists and helping three Tigers finish in double digits. Charlie Albert led all scorers with 25 points, Mason Ray finished with 15 points, and Darren Orth added 13 to the Tigers’ victory. Albert also added 12 rebounds and five steals to finish with a double-double, and Orth continued his defensive prowess, adding five steals of his own.
The Tigers were back at home on Friday night to play the Uvalde Coyotes (0-10). The game was all Tigers from the tipoff. Floresville shot 60 percent in the first half, giving them a 26-point lead at halftime. The Tigers continued to shoot well in the second half, and picked up another win against Uvalde, 70-39.
Four players finished in double digits, including Charlie Albert, Jaron Medina, and Mason Ray with 11 points apiece. Estevan Mendiola added another 10 points. Medina tallied four assists, and Albert and Orth picked up three steals each.
The wins give the Tigers a District 29-4A record of 10-1, and a 22-8 record overall.
The Tigers were scheduled to go on the road and face a very tough Medina Valley team Feb. 5, but will be back at home to play Kennedy Friday, Feb. 8, at 6:30 p.m. Friday night will also be Senior Night, as it will be the last district home game for the Tigers. Go, Tigers!
