Allene Emma Blum Deskin
Allene Emma Blum Deskin, a resident of San Antonio since 1955, passed away Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at 2:55 p.m. in the Patriot Heights Healthcare Center in San Antonio at the age of 87 years, 5 months, and 13 days. Allene was born Aug. 22, 1925, in Floresville, Texas, the oldest of six children of Linda Barosh and Walter Gus Blum Sr.
She was no stranger to hard work, being the daughter of sharecroppers and responsible for the care of younger siblings. She married James William Deskin on May 26, 1949. Together, they had three children, Cheryl Schneider, Steve Deskin, and Jeanne McLanathan. Allene’s passions were reading, crafting, writing, and games. Having never driven a car, she made sure her children did not miss out on things like parks, museums, libraries, and special events. They took the bus most every place they went. Always dealing with a tight budget, Allene was able to put nutritious meals on the table and provide for her family’s every need. In her later years, she was able to enjoy some travel and actually made trips to San Francisco and Washington, D.C., by herself, at the age of 60. Allene’s children will be forever indebted to her for seeing that they were baptized in the Christian faith, confirmed, and attended Sunday school and church on a regular basis. Most recently, Allene was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, where she treasured relationships with the Senior Shepherds. Her final home was at Patriot Heights Nursing Home, where she was family.
Allene was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband of more than 49 years, James William Deskin (died Oct. 12, 1998); and her siblings, Walter Blum Jr., Ruby Tieken, and Ray Blum.
She is survived by her three children, Cheryl Schneider and husband Barry of Charlotte, N.C., and Steve Deskin and wife Sandy, and Jeanne McLanathan, all of San Antonio; her six grandchildren, Courtney, Kristin, Dina, David, Paul, and Isaac; her four great-grandchildren, Noah, Harper, Baker, and Aidan (with one more on the way); her siblings, Lindell Goyen and husband Ivan, and Roy Blum and wife Betty; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Friday, Feb. 8, at 9 a.m. in the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in San Antonio.
A funeral service was held on Friday at 10 a.m. in the church officiated by the Rev. Chris Kennedy. Interment followed at 2 p.m. in the Floresville City Cemetery in Floresville.
