Eagle Ford: Rezoning request meets opposition in Stockdale
Stockdale Mayor Johnny Stahl (from left), City Secretary Thania Santos, City Manager Banks Akin, and councilmen Becky Adams and Roger Armstrong listen to citizens opposed to a zoning change during a Feb. 5 public hearing.
STOCKDALE -- The Eagle Ford shale oil and gas exploration continues to provide economic development opportunities. One such proposal brought fierce opposition Feb. 5 during a public hearing and regular Stockdale City Council meeting.
Approximately 15 people attended the public hearing to voice their opposition to rezoning property from a residential district to a multi-family district. A buyer interested in property located at the end of South Eighth Street is seeking rezoning for a manufactured homes subdivision.
Everyone with property located within 200 feet of the proposed property was notified by mail of the proposed rezoning change, and received an announcement of this public hearing, Stockdale City Manager Banks Akin said.
Comments to the council included concerns about increased traffic in the area. One resident stated he does not want a trailer park in his back yard. Concerns also were expressed about possible noise and nuisance issues.
Akin cited the economic advantages for the development. The residents would be using city utilities, thus adding income to city coffers.
“Your feedback is most valuable,” Akin said.
A vote on the rezoning request will take place during the March 5 city council meeting.
After the conclusion of the public hearing, the council met in regular session.
Gary West asked the council to reconsider its Jan. 8 rejection of bids for property. West was one of two bidders on a 0.85-acre tract of land once comprising part of Birdsong Peanuts.
West said he did not include his development intent within the bid package. If developed, the project could be the city’s second-largest utility user, West said. The proposed project is associated with the Eagle Ford shale exploration.
Mayor Johnny Stahl instructed City Manager Banks Akin to advertise the property again, so interested parties may submit a bid package.
Also during the meeting, the council approved a special election for a proposed increase in the local sales and use tax and annexation of part of the industrial park. See story this page for more.
