ESD No. 1 president gives update on ongoing projects
LA VERNIA -- Because two board members began their terms in January, members of the Wilson County Emergency Services District (ESD) No. 1 board of commissioners spent much of their Feb. 15 meeting discussing the status of ongoing projects and initiatives. Board President Roberta Ensor said after the meeting that business items included:
•Closing on the purchase of the La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department’s station No. 2 property, which is located on F.M. 3432 near F.M. 775. Plans are under way to construct a larger, more substantial building that can house more trucks and equipment.
•Continued efforts to recruit more firefighters, with recent success experienced at the fire department’s pancake breakfast. Additional recruitment drives will occur at events such as La Vernia High School’s upcoming “Shattered Dreams” presentation.
•The recent application that requests $20,000 in grant funds through the Guadalupe Valley Electrical Cooperative’s PowerUp Grant program, for continued modifications to Rehab 1 -- a vehicle that will be used to provide services to firefighters at fire scenes. The grant funds, if awarded, would be used to purchase items, such as a carbon dioxide meter.
•An incentive program that would allow the ESD to cover some of the costs incurred by volunteer firefighters when on call and attending meetings and training. Funds also would be dispersed to firefighters based on a certain percentage of incidents to which they respond.
•Allocation of approximately $1,700 to outsource the remainder of the fire department’s preplanning, which will help devise specific strategies for fighting fires at commercial buildings located within the ESD.
•Allocation of less than $1,800 for workers compensation insurance for the fire department, which would cover firefighters in the event of on-duty injury.
In other ESD business, Ensor said that board member Tommy Terry submitted his resignation in January. The Wilson County Commissioners Court will choose his successor at a later date.
