LA VERNIA -- Former La Vernia City Council member Marie Gerlich has stepped in to fill the remaining term of Councilman D. Bradford Beck. He offered his resignation Jan. 15 during a special city council meeting, said City Secretary-Treasurer Angela Cantu.
Gerlich was sworn in Feb. 14 during the regular city council meeting.
Residents will vote to fill three council seats during the May 11 general election. These are held currently by Randy Leonard and Eloi Cormier, in addition to Gerlich.
According to Cantu, four applicants are needed in order to hold the election. If only three applications are received, the election will be canceled.
Also during the meeting, councilmen Bobby Richter, John Richter, Leonard, and Gerlich, along with Mayor Robert Gregory, heard from the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission Chair Jennifer Moczygemba about a possible town hall meeting.
According to Moczy-gemba, more and more people are coming to La Vernia, looking to start businesses.
“There are lots of rumors floating around the city,” Moczygemba said. “We want to know what the people want their city to look like in the next three to six months.”
All entities can be part of the meeting, including the city council, Planning and Zoning Commission, and the municipal development district, as well as community members. A date has not been set yet; the meeting is planned for April.
In other business, the council approved a Spring Cleanup to be held March 16-24. Large dumpsters will be set up for community members at the end of Forrest Street to dispose of trash, brush, furniture, and more.
