FLORESVILLE -- The fight for the financial future of Floresville continues as city officials work to solve the ongoing insolvency crisis.

During the Feb. 14 Floresville City Council meeting, Councilman Jim Miller presented updates from the city’s audit committee meetings.

Addressing the concerns of city employees, Miller elaborated on some potential money-saving actions considered, and made it clear that any salary freezes that may come would not take effect until the next budgeting cycle.

Tied to the financial discussion was a request from Lt. Jesse Evins of the Floresville Police Department for the council to release funds from the Municipal Court Technology Fund to assist the department in purchasing a “Ticket Writer” from Brazos Communications. On behalf of the department, Evins requested $7,000 to go toward the purchase of the machine, which would cost no less than $27,000.

“$7,000 would be from the Municipal Court Technology Fund,” Evins said. “We have $3,000 from the ‘Click-it-or-Ticket’ campaign, and will be using the other $17,000 or $18,000 from our drug seizure fund.”

Pressed by the council regarding the amount in the seizure fund, Evins said it was around $25,000. It would be more than $100,000 if Floresville had a narcotics task force, he said.

A revenue sheet provided by City Comptroller Lara Feagins stated the Municipal Court Technology Fund only took in about $3,000; after reviewing this, the council voted to table the item until more information is available about the balance of the fund.

Also on the agenda was an update of current projects by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

Mayor Diana Garza questioned TxDOT representative Ben Engelhardt on the future of a traffic signal at the intersection of S.H. 97 West and U.S. 181. Engelhardt said such projects usually take about 24 months; that particular project was submitted more than a year ago and was approved.

In other business, the council:

•Approved a proclamation for the Junior Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

•Approved submission for the voluntary annexation of the McCoy’s Development on U.S. 181 N.

•Approved the professional planning services agreement by Stewart Planning Consulting LLC for the city’s future land use plan.

•Recognized Rose Marie Carvajal as the city’s employee of the month.

•Presented Floresville Independent School District Social Worker Ben Reed with the city’s Citizen Award.

In attendance: City Manager Andy Joslin; City Secretary Sherry Pollok; Cyndi Nichols with the Permits Office; Mayor Diana Garza; and councilmen Sherry M. Castillo, Jim Miller, Eric Rodriguez, Mario Morones, and John Guerrero.

That is the sort of short sighted decision making that has been made in the past that has got us in this predicament. Get it??
