U.S. 181 and F.M. 775: Wilson County’s most dangerous intersection

Whether it is because of the urban sprawl from San Antonio or because of the Eagle Ford shale oil and natural gas play, traffic on Wilson County’s roadways is at an all-time high. With more traffic come more traffic crashes.

As a result of more passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles traveling area thoroughfares, navigating intersections has become increasingly stressful for even the best drivers. This is why the Wilson County News in December asked Facebook fans, “What do you think is the most dangerous traffic intersection in Wilson County?”

Participants were given a choice of nine intersections and “other.” All the intersections are locations of many crashes that the newspaper has written about over the years. The results are above right.

As of Feb. 13, the intersection of U.S. 181 and F.M. 775 north of Floresville overwhelmingly led the pack with 72 votes. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, that intersection had 13 reportable motor-vehicle traffic crashes in 2012, of which one ended with a fatality. Eight of those crashes ended with possible injuries for those involved.

TxDOT defines a reportable incident as, “Any crash involving a motor vehicle in transport that occurs or originates on a traffic way, results in injury or death to any person, or damage to the property of any one person to the apparent extent of $1,000.”

Jason Reyes, spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol, said he could not confirm whether this was the county’s most dangerous or most deadly intersection. He said that troopers will continue enforcement efforts to ensure traffic safety in that area, and Reyes praised TxDOT for installing traffic lights at the intersection in October 2007.

The second-highest vote-getter was the intersection of U.S. 181 and S.H. 97 (Hospital Boulevard) in Floresville. Of the four crashes reported there in 2012, only one ended with a possible injury.

TxDOT Spokesman Laura Lopez said her agency recently conducted a traffic study at the U.S. 181 and Hospital Boulevard intersection.

“As a result of this study, TxDOT is currently working to identify funding for the installation of a traffic signal at this intersection,” she said.

But TxDOT’s monitoring of the intersection does not stop with installing a traffic light. Adjustments are made according to changes in travel demand.

“Should safety concerns arise in relation to a traffic signal, TxDOT will review crash reports to identify causes attributed to the crashes and, when appropriate, install additional traffic control devices --signs, markings, rumble strips, advance flashers, etc. -- to address the causes,” Lopez said.

Running a close third, with 22 votes, was the intersection of U.S. 87 and F.M. 1346 in La Vernia. TxDOT reported seven crashes there in 2012, of which two ended with possible injuries.

Reyes would not comment on the other two intersections that readers voted as the most dangerous, as they are within the limits of incorporated cities. He did, however, remind drivers to be more patient, watch their speed, and to drive defensively.

Most dangerous intersections

In December, the Wilson County News asked its Facebook fans, “What do you think is the most dangerous traffic intersection in Wilson County?” Here are the results as of Feb. 13:

•U.S. 181 and F.M. 775 -- 72 votes

•S.H. 97 (Hospital Boulevard) and U.S. 181 (Exxon in Floresville) -- 24 votes

•U.S. 87 and F.M. 1346 in La Vernia (H-E-B shopping center) -- 22 votes

•S.H. 123 and U.S. 87 Business in Stockdale -- 16 votes

•U.S. 181 and C.R. 130/330 (Walmart Supercenter in Floresville) -- 12 votes

•U.S. 87 and S.H. 123 in Stockdale -- 10 votes

•U.S. 87 and F.M. 539 in Sutherland Springs -- 6 votes

• Other (please comment) -- 5 votes

•S.H. 123 and F.M. 541 in Kosciusko -- 4 votes

•S.H. 123 and F.M. 1681 in Nockenut -- 1 vote

Yep, that intersection sucks. There have been less accidents there since they put the lights up. Unlike the lights by 1604 and 181. The first week, those lights were up I saw an accident everyday where I had never seen one before.

I would love to see the accident data for the 775 and 181 intersection for the 5 yeras prior to the Traffic light. It is my belief that installing traffic lights are not that effective in reducing accidents. I wonder if Mr.Reyes ... More ›

The intersection of 775 and 181 was a very dangerous intersection before they installed the traffic signal. There is no reason why this should still be dangerous, if drivers would pay attention to the light and they remember ... More ›
