My personal angel in Purple
Rainy Days and Starry NightsFebruary 20, 2013 | 2,537 views | Post a comment
I remember it was a Friday. I will always remember that day and I call it my “Angel in Purple” day. God always sends me a sign that He is near when I am going through a bad time.
I wonder how many people have had hallucinations. I never did until last month when I was in the hospital. It was on Jan. 7 that I tripped and fell on my back porch, and fractured my pelvic bone. Ten days in the hospital and I am home, but still recovering. They say this may take a long time.
When bad things happen I try to look for something good to focus on. That is how I cope. For about a week in the hospital, I was in such pain, the doctors were trying to find the right medication to help me. That first week I was on the fourth drug to see if it helped. Nothing had helped.
I had a drug I had never had before. Well, that afternoon, it seems I had many visitors coming in and out of my room. There were some of my friends and family and many doctors and nurses. But they would not talk to me! When I tried to talk to them, they would disappear. One time I saw all the nurses and doctors gathered in a group in the corner of the room. Were they talking about me? I never knew. One time I saw my granddaughter and my daughter sitting at a table. But when I tried to talk to them, they disappeared.
Then another strange thing happened! When I opened my eyes one time, my bed seemed to be on the ceiling and the TV and all the things on that wall were on the floor. That happened several times that day. I was not scared, I just thought that was the way things were!
Yes, they were hallucinations! I realized that when they stopped that night and I remembered what I had seen that afternoon. I wanted to tell a nurse so she could tell the doctor, that I did not want that drug they had given me ever again!
Well, finally someone came in the room. When I saw her I thought I was hallucinating again. Or was it an angel? A little old lady dressed in a purple nurse’s uniform came in (nurses usually dress in scrubs these days), pushing a nurse’s computer on a cart. Slowly she glided in the door, and smiled at me, and said “hello.”
Then she began to work at the computer. I thought maybe she was an aide, so I asked, “Are you the only aide working tonight?”
She murmured something I could not understand, so I asked her to tell the nurse I wanted to talk her. She asked me what I wanted to tell the nurse. I told her about the hallucinations and the drug I didn’t want any more. Then I asked how long she had been an aide.
Then she said softly, “I am a nurse. I have been in nursing for 40 years.”
I lay there, amazed, embarrassed, and hoping I had not hurt her feelings. Then she said her computer had locked up and she had to find someone to help her. She told me she would be back later and slowly pushed the cart out of my room. She smiled a sweet smile at me, saying she would be back.
As I looked at her perfectly coifed silver hair, her purple nurse’s uniform, and her white nurse’s shoes, she disappeared. I was wondering if she was another one of my hallucinations or an angel sent by God.
But sure enough, half an hour later she came back in, computer working fine, and gave me my night pills, and did the things that nurses do, and went out the door telling me to call if I needed anything.
The next day I asked the nurses and technicians if there really was a night nurse like that. I found out there was, and she is 75 years old. Her name is Betsy.
I looked forward to the next night, but I never had her as my nurse again. Later in the week, one night she came into my room, and then turned around and went out, smiling and waving her hand, as she said, “Oops! I am in the wrong room. I guess I was sent here to say hello to you.”
I figured God had sent her to cheer me up and tell me He was close by. I call her my Purple Angel.
