La Vernia tennis team wins awards at East Central tourney
EAST CENTRAL -- It was a good showing for the La Vernia tennis team Feb. 8-9, as team members took home several top awards from the East Central tournament.
In mixed doubles action, the team of Nick Guitron and Destiny Roath took home first-place honors. The duo began with an 8-3 win over the team from Jefferson, then picked up an 8-3 win over the team from East Central in the quarterfinals. In the semi-finals, La Vernia got past John Jay, then knocked off Pleasanton in the finals.
In girls doubles play, Haleigh Johnson and Paula Watson took first place, as well. The Lady Bears began with an 8-6 win over Brackenridge, then a quick 8-2 victory over John Jay. Johnson and Watson met the team from Pleasanton in the semifinals, but had little trouble getting past them en route to the finals. La Vernia had a showdown with Incarnate Word for the championship, but made things look easy for the win.
A third La Vernia award was garnered as Preslie Pavlich won the girls singles consolation championship. Pavlich lost her first match to a player from Seguin, but then came back with a big win over a girl from Jefferson. She then picked up an 8-6 victory over a player from Pleasanton to reach the consolation finals. She went on to win the consolation by default, but was happy to take the win.
In other doubles action, Zach Kubena and Alex Leytham squared off with players from Pleasanton and Jefferson; Logan Parker and Catherine Miller played matches against Incarnate Word and Seguin; and Joey Rincon and Justin Kvapil squared off with a pair of players from Brackenridge and Central Catholic. Megan Amerson faced girls from John Jay and Pleasanton.
