Lady Bears win bi-district, fall in area championship
LA VERNIA -- After a real rollercoaster of a season, things have come to an end for the La Vernia Lady Bear basketball team. The Lady Bears finished third in District 28-3A to grab a playoff spot, and then knocked off Fredericksburg in the bi-district round of competition, but eventually fell to Smithville in the area championship last Friday night.
The Lady Bears played a consistent four periods of basketball last Tuesday against Fredericksburg. La Vernia trailed slightly after the first period of play, 17-15, but put together a better defensive effort in the second, holding Fredericksburg to just 9 points, and knotting up the score 26-all at the break.
While Fredericksburg struggled to score in the third and managed just 8 points, the Lady Bears hung 15 on the board, allowing them to take a 41-34 lead into the final eight minutes of play. Fredericksburg came back to outscore La Vernia in the period, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit, and the Lady Bears celebrated a 52-47 victory. Freshman sensation Autumn Light led the La Vernia scoring effort with 25 points, and junior Madison Towns added another 9.
With a bi-district win to their credit, the Lady Bears advanced to the area championship, where they took on Smithville. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as well for La Vernia, and the team was eliminated from the playoffs with a 64-40 loss.
In the first period, the Lady Bears struggled to score, putting just 6 points on the board. Smithville was good for 11, though, and took a 5-point advantage into the second. The Lady Bears played things a tad tighter in the second, but were still outscored 10-7, and trailed 21-13 at the break.
The scoring action picked up dramatically in the third period, as La Vernia matched its entire first-half scoring effort in the third stanza alone. Unfortunately, Smithville did the same. While the Lady Bears added 13 to the scoreboard, Smithville added 20, and held a 41-26 lead going into the final period of play.
The scoring barrage from both teams continued throughout the fourth period, with La Vernia scoring another 14, and Smithville adding another 23. When the final buzzer sounded, it was Smithville heading on to regional play with a 64-40 victory.
Light once again led the Lady Bear scoring effort with 22 points, Ford scored 5, and Kelsee Penshorn and Brooke Martinez scored 4 points apiece.
It was a tough loss for La Vernia, but there is a lot to look forward to in the future. While the Lady Bears will lose Cat Reed and Taylor Penshorn to graduation next year, the team will return a number of varsity players, including several starters.
