East Central bumped from playoffs
SAN ANTONIO -- They made another playoff appearance, but after falling to Stevens 65-33 last Tuesday night, the basketball season has come to an end for the East Central Lady Hornets.
After finishing third in District 28-5A, the Lady Hornets drew a good Stevens team out of District 27-5A in the bi-district round of the playoffs. Stevens finished second with a 13-3 district mark.
As the bi-district playoff game got under way, the Lady Hornets found themselves struggling to keep pace from the onset. Stevens shot well right out of the box, and opened up a 20-9 lead after the first period of play.
In the second, it was much like the first for East Central, as Stevens once again outscored the Lady Hornets. East Central held its opponents to 15 during the second stanza, but still found itself on the short end of the scoreboard, trailing 35-18 at the break.
The third period was a disaster for East Central, as the Lady Hornets managed just 4 points through eight minutes of play. Stevens went on to add another 15 to the board, and all but put the game out of reach by the end of the third, leading East Central, 50-22.
The Lady Hornets had their best scoring period in the fourth with 11 points, but Stevens added another 15 and sealed the win by the final score of 65-33. It marked the final game of the season for East Central, and the final game of their careers for several senior Lady Hornets.
Graduation will remove Kayla White, Azaria Nave, Briana Sanders-Easley, Rebecca Olvera, Laura Silva, and Kayla Lund from the roster. These will be huge shoes to fill, no doubt, but the Lady Hornets will undoubtedly be as fun to watch as ever. With another year to learn Coach Joshua Barnes’ system, it would be foolish to count East Central out of anything during the 2013-14 season.
