1939-2013

Louis Olenick Sr., 73, passed away in his home Friday, Feb. 8, 2013. He was born on Aug. 12, 1939, in Cestohowa, Texas, to Edmund and Frances Moy Olenick. He was one of 10 children.

Upon graduating from high school in Falls City in 1957, Louis enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany for two years. Louis moved to Sonora in 1961, and went to work for his brother, Junior, at the Dairy Mart, where he met Nova Jean Crawford. Louis and Nova married on Sept. 28, 1963. They had three children, Louis Jr., Michelle, and Lorna. Louis and Nova were married 29 years.

Louis retired from the Texas Highway Department after 32 years of dedicated service, where he held many positions. Upon his retirement he was proud to be the area supervisor. Louis was reacquainted with Marian “Tee” Glasscock, and they married on Nov. 4, 1995. They were married for 16 years. Louis gave to his hometown through many different organizations. His tireless efforts included the Game Dinner Association, Christmas in April, the Lions Club, and 28 years of service to the Sonora Volunteer Fire Department. He held the position of fire chief from 1974-76, and again from 1981-84. Louis was voted Fireman of the Year in 1986.

Louis never sat still. He enjoyed “tinkering” around the house, which included his mechanic abilities and his carpentry skills. He took great pride in having a beautiful yard. He was always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need. Louis loved to garden and share his “crop.” He also loved to love the Dallas Cowboys, as well as he loved to hate them. But his true passion was fishing, even though most of his fish were caught while he was napping on the boat. Frying fish was his specialty and no one else’s could compare. Louis will be greatly missed by all, said his family.

Louis was preceded in death by his first wife, Nova Olenick; his parents; brothers Bron Olenick, Thomas Olenick, Edmund “Junior” Olenick, Alfonse Olenick, and James Olenick; and a sister, Theresa Morgan.

He is survived by his wife, “Tee”; his children, Louis Olenick Jr. and wife Mary of San Marcos, Michelle Lipham and husband Clifton of Sonora, Lorna Olenick of Anchorage, Alaska; TJ Thompson and wife Ora of Hobbs, N.M., and Tanna Thompson of Big Spring; his grandchildren, Ryan Thompson, John Thompson, Nova Nicole Lipham, Gregory Thompson, Alexandria Olenick, Katelyn Lipham, and Jeremy Olenick; one great-granddaughter, Valerie Thompson; sisters Carolyn Olenick and Mary Moczygemba; brother Eugene Olenick; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m. in the Sonora First Baptist Church in Sonora.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sonora Volunteer Fire Department, 510 S. Concho, Sonora, TX 76950.
