1922-2013

Arthur Salvador Rodriguez Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013. He was born on Sept. 3, 1922, to Ercilia Rivera and Arthur S. Rodriguez Sr.

He was a proud descendant of Salvador Rodriguez, one of the original settlers from the Canary Islands that came to San Antonio in 1731. Arthur was a lifelong resident of Southeast San Antonio. His life was devoted to his family, his church, and his community. Arthur was a 1941 graduate of Central Catholic High School. He began his federal career in aircraft metal surface repair at Kelly Field in San Antonio in 1941. He volunteered in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was assigned to a unit destined for China. His unit became part of the esteemed Flying Tigers and his job was to repair planes damaged in battle. Following the war, he returned to the United States and was discharged on Jan. 12, 1946, resuming his civilian career at Kelly Field.

On Aug. 4, 1948, he married Felice Quintero. They enjoyed many years of traveling with the family. A founding member of St. Margaret Mary’s Church, he served on the Pastoral Council, Eucharistic Ministry, and the Hospitality Committee. Arthur was a member of the Men’s Club and devoted much of his time to St. Margaret Mary’s School. “Mr. Rod,” as he was affectionately known to hundreds of Boy Scouts, was active in Scouting for 50 years primarily with Troop 177. He enjoyed many favorite pastimes during his retirement years. He took great pride in working at the family ranch in Wilson County with his father and brothers, raising cattle and harvesting feed for the animals. He also enjoyed gardening and bird-watching in his back yard.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Virginia Rodriguez, O.P.; and brother Andrew.

Arthur is survived by his wife, Felice Quintero Rodriguez; children Arthur and wife Sonia, Francis and wife Betty, Raymond and wife Carmen, Paul, Richard and wife Delma, Peggy Whittington and husband John, and Martin and wife Sylvia; sisters Marie Kotzur and Virginia Rodriguez; brother Anthony Rodriguez; 18 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Monday, Feb. 25, at 6 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. in St. Margaret Mary’s Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas.

A funeral Mass of the Resurrection was held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the church.

Interment followed in the San Fernando Cemetery No. 2 in San Antonio.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Margaret Mary’s Capital Campaign, 1314 Fair Ave., San Antonio, TX 78223.
