Eagle Ford: LVISD board assesses STAAR performance
LA VERNIA -- The La Vernia Independent School District (ISD) is assessing its performance on the state-mandated State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, commonly called STAAR tests, which replaced the former Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, or TAKS, last school year.
During their Feb. 18 board meeting, the district’s trustees reviewed data sets compiled locally to interpret the raw data sent by the state for the newly implemented STAAR test. (See “STAAR data) for some of the information presented.)
“As this is a new system, we wanted to get an idea of how to interpret the data,” Superintendent Tom Harvey said. “But the numbers we have don’t really mean much, because there is nothing to compare them to yet and we won’t have that information until we get that from the state later this year. In this data, we just wanted to get a general idea of how we did; I think we did well.”
Also during the meeting, the board reorganized, with a new president taking the helm.
Janice Gimbel replaced Mike Jendrusch as board president. Eric Friedrichs and Richard Schier will fill the roles of vice president and secretary, respectively.
This is three months earlier than normal; the board usually reorganizes in May, Harvey said.
“There are some personal matters that needed to be attended to by outgoing officers,” Harvey said. “So the board decided to reorganize now, instead.”
The board also accepted a donation from the La Vernia Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) during the meeting.
“This donation will go to the technology fund at the primary school,” Harvey said. “It was $11,000, accumulated through the various fund-raisers held by the PTO throughout the year. We are very grateful to have such a generous donation.”
The funds will be used to enrich the experience at the primary school through the purchase of newer technology, such as iPads and computers.
The board also:
•Called an election for the school board, Places 1, 2, 3, and 4; current board members in these places are Jendrusch, Schier, John Bilicek, and Friedrichs, respectively.
•Discussed the transfer policies of the district and a leave reimbursement policy, but no action was taken.
La Vernia Independent School District student passing rates on the new State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) during the 2012-13 academic year are:
•Algebra I, 87.7 percent
•Geometry, 100 percent
•Biology, 91 percent
•Chemistry, 82 percent
•Physics, 92 percent
•English, 76 percent
•World Geography, 88 percent
In attendance: Superintendent Tom Harvey; Assistant Superintendent Diane Fisher; board members Richard Schier, Eric Friedrichs, James Barnett, David Watson, Michael Jendrusch, Janice Gimbel, and John Bilicek; Director of Finance Laura Ramzinski; Technology Director Allen Bordelon; and Superintendent’s Secretary Kristen Beavers.
