Rue Powers, a comedian from Fort Worth, entertained the La Vernia Garden Club during its Feb. 7 meeting in the home of Joyce Beck.

Rue assumed a fictitious name, Ida Mae Whitehead, and pretended to be moving to La Vernia to open a boarding house on Chihuahua Street. She was absolutely hilarious and everyone had a great afternoon.

The club voted to award a $500 scholarship to a student in the Culinary Arts Department at La Vernia High School. President Jackie West appointed a committee to select a slate of officers for the 2013-14 club year. The new officers will be voted on at the March meeting, which will be held in the La Margarita Restaurant in San Antonio after a tour of the Spanish Governor’s Palace and the San Fernando Cathedral.

For more information, call Jackie West at 210-649-4004.
